For a company, certification means both official recognition and a means to demonstrate reliability and transparency to customers, partners and investors.

The first such initiatives emerged in the 1980s in response to concerns about deforestation and the use of hazardous chemicals. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Green Seal are two early examples. Later, European instruments such as EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) emerged, and internationally, certifications have been linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Certifications vs ratings

Although often mentioned together, certifications and ratings have different roles.

Certification involves a rigorous assessment based on clear criteria and external verification. The result is an official recognition of compliance with standards.

The ratings are rather comparative assessments, based on proprietary methodologies and publicly available or company-provided data. They express a level of performance but do not provide a formal guarantee of certification.

Benefits of certifications

There are obvious advantages to having a certification. Firstly, it increases the confidence of those around you - whether consumers, investors or business partners. At a time when the term 'sustainability' is frequently used, certification makes the difference between a simple declaration and a verified commitment.

Another benefit is operational efficiency. The certification process forces the organisation to take a closer look at its activities, reduce waste and use resources more responsibly. These changes often translate into direct cost savings. In addition, certifications support compliance with European regulations such as the CSR Directive on sustainability reporting, reducing the risk of sanctions or exclusion from supply chains.

Examples of certifications

ESG reporting and transparency

GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) - international framework for ESG reporting

SASB/ISSB - industry-specific standards used to analyse risks and opportunities

CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) - reporting on climate strategies and environmental risks.

Environment

ISO 14001 - globally recognised standard for environmental management systems

LEED - certification for energy efficient and environmentally friendly buildings

Carbon Trust Standard - confirms carbon reduction

EU Ecolabel - the European Union's official ecolabel for products and services

EMAS - European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme.

Social and ethical

SA8000 - certification for fair and safe working conditions

Fair Trade - guarantees fair trade and fair prices for producers

Rainforest Alliance - certification for responsible agriculture and ecosystem protection.

Sectoral and EU-specific

ISCC EU - for biomass and sustainable fuels

BREEAM, WELL, EPC, EPC, SRI - standards for construction and property

EU Taxonomy - official classification system for sustainable economic activities

How companies choose the right certification

The choice of certification depends on the sector of activity, the applicable regulations and the objectives of the organisation. For example, a construction company will be particularly interested in standards such as LEED or BREEAM, while an agricultural producer will find Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance more relevant.

It is important for firms to consider the extent to which certification is recognised in the markets in which they operate and the rigour of the process. Certifications that involve regular external audits are more valuable to investors and partners. At the same time, a certification should be seen as a long-term development tool, not just a one-off response to a market requirement.

Steps to certification

Choosing the right standard for the company's domain and objectives

Analysing differences between existing practices and the requirements of the standard

Implementation of necessary measures and preparation of documentation

External audit by an independent body

Maintain compliance through regular reporting and verification.

The certification process is often complex. The extensive documentation and associated costs can be daunting, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition, the European legislative framework is constantly evolving and companies need to be prepared for frequent adaptations.

These challenges can be managed by careful planning, dividing the process into clear steps and designating a responsible person/teams. Self-assessment tools made available by certification bodies can simplify the process, and in some cases working with external consultants can be useful. Seen in this way, certification can be an opportunity for organisational development and market differentiation.

Definiție Certificările de sustenabilitate sunt mecanisme prin care o organizație independentă confirmă că o companie respectă standarde bine definite în domeniul mediului, al practicilor sociale și al guvernanței economice.
