The process is innovative and contributes to idea validation, community development and market access.

Platforms facilitate interaction between fundraisers and supporters. They usually only charge a commission if the campaign is successful. All-or-nothing models ensure that, if the target is not reached, the money raised is returned with no loss to the backers.

Non-financial benefits

In addition to capital, crowdfunding brings important advantages:

Proof of concept - public involvement indicates real interest and acceptance of the idea.

Facilitates access to other sources of funding - a successful campaign can provide credibility with banks, VCs or private investors.

Access to a community - supporters can provide valuable feedback and relevant ideas for free.

An effective marketing tool - campaigns attract attention and create visibility even before the product launch.

Types of crowdfunding used for SMEs

According to the European Commission, the most common types of crowdfunding for SMEs are:

Peer-to-peer lending (crowdlending)
Lenders make loans to companies on the promise of repayment with interest. Basically, it's similar to a bank loan, but with multiple people involved.

Equity crowdfunding
Offering a stake in the company in return for your investment. Same idea as on the stock exchange or in VC, but open to the general public.
Key issues: setting the terms of the investment (price, participation, rewards), associated costs: success fees, administrative, legal, the need for a sound business plan and financial forecasts, due diligence, investor rights and legal implications to consider.

Rewards-based crowdfunding
Supporters contribute financially in exchange for non-financial rewards (e.g. products, services).

Other (less common) models: donation-based crowdfunding, profit/revenue sharing, crowdfunding based on debt instruments (e.g. bonds), hybrid models combining different approaches

Risks associated with crowdfunding

Crowdfunding involves both opportunities and risks, which SMEs need to navigate carefully:

Missing the target - in the all-or-nothing model, failure to reach the target implies the return of the money collected.

Intellectual property exposure - publishing your idea risks its replication. Consultation with authorities and platforms for protection is recommended.

Underestimating costs - time, administrative and communication costs may be higher than expected.

Reputational damage - experienced investors may criticise a project if it is not well presented or prepared.

Legal and disclosure requirements - required documents, legal compliance and transparency can generate significant costs and effort.

Unstable regulations - crowdfunding law is constantly evolving, and failure to comply with the requirements can have negative consequences.

Platform issues - using unsafe platforms can jeopardise your campaign; regulated and trusted platforms are recommended.

Managing investor relations - a large number of investors can create complexities around voting rights and communication.

Investor exit - change or withdrawal of investors may affect the ownership structure and control of the company.

Crowdfunding is a viable financing option for SMEs, offering financial resources and strategic benefits such as market validation, marketing and access to networks. Success depends on rigorous preparation, choosing the right model and carefully managing legal, reputational and operational risks.
