It is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Global Compact principles on respect for human rights and the elimination of discrimination in employment. Organisations usually use it as part of their internal assessment processes or to prepare their sustainability and human rights reporting.

How to apply the tool

The utilisation process starts with the appointment of a responsible person who coordinates the work. Subsequently, a support team is set up with representatives from relevant departments such as human resources, governance, training or reporting. The questionnaire can be downloaded in PDF or Excel format to make it easy to collect the necessary information and documents, and is completed directly on the platform, where the answers are automatically saved and can be updated at any time.

Upon completion, the company receives a detailed report that includes an overall score, an assessment of performance in each area analysed and recommendations for improvement. The platform also provides dedicated resources that can be used to reinforce internal measures. The analysis is designed to be repeated periodically - usually annually or every few years - so that progress and the effectiveness of the policies implemented can be tracked.

Added value for businesses

Applying the tool gives organisations a realistic picture of the level of inclusion and equity in the workplace. The results identify both strengths and areas for improvement, providing a solid basis for informed decisions. Obvious benefits include better alignment with international standards, strengthening organisational culture, increasing employee trust and enhancing company reputation. Using the tool can also help attract and retain a diverse and competitive workforce.

Scope: topics and questions

The questionnaire is structured into 13 performance areas, each dealing with equality and non-discrimination in the workplace. The questions in each area guide organisations to analyse their current level and identify clear directions for progress.

Internal policies - clear commitments on non-discrimination.

Management involvement - the role of leadership and embedding principles in strategy.

Recruitment - transparent processes and equal access to opportunities.

Promotion and professional development - fair access to training and promotion.

Compensation and benefits - pay fairness and eliminate unjustified differences.

Working conditions - inclusive policies tailored to the diverse needs of employees.

Referral and protection mechanisms - effective reporting channels and prevention of retaliation.

Training and awareness-raising - training programmes for employees and management.

Inclusive organisational culture - initiatives that promote participation and diversity.

External involvement - collaborations and public campaigns for equality.

Monitoring and reporting - collecting and reporting progress.

Diversity in the supply chain - Integration of suppliers from under-represented groups.

Supplier performance - promoting equality principles in trade relations.

Relevance of the UN Global Compact for business

The UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative, bringing together thousands of companies and organisations in over 160 countries.
