At the end of July 2025, EFRAG (European Financial Reporting Advisory Group) released for public consultation a revised version of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards - ESRS. These changes come in the context of the implementation of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which imposes extensive transparency obligations on a large number of companies in the European Union.<\/p>\n

Proposed changes<\/h2>\n

EFRAG's proposed set significantly simplifies the reporting requirements. Mainly, there are three key aspects worth noting:<\/p>\n

    Reducing the amount of information required<\/strong>
    Compared to the standards adopted in 2023, the number of mandatory reporting requirements has been reduced by over 50%. Information considered optional has been removed from the text of the standards and will be addressed separately in guidance documents.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    More flexibility for assessing materiality<\/strong>
    Companies will no longer have to justify in detail the decision not to report on certain issues if they are not relevant to their business. At the same time, it will allow effects to be addressed in a \"net\" form - i.e. taking into account measures already taken to prevent or mitigate impacts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Adaptations for small and medium-sized businesses<\/strong>
    The new proposals include the possibility of temporary derogations from certain requirements, in particular for social and value chain reporting. These measures are designed to support SMEs in the transition towards full sustainable reporting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What it means for companies in Romania<\/h2>\n

    For many local companies, particularly those that are part of international supply chains, the new standards can bring greater clarity and applicability. Rather than extensive and uniform reporting, the new framework can be seen as an opportunity for companies to adapt according to their business profile and operational specificities.<\/p>\n

    Next steps<\/h2>\n

    The public consultation is open until 29 September 2025. During this period, companies, business associations, consultants and other interested parties can submit views and proposals on the final form of the standards. EFRAG will then finalise the documents and submit them to the European Commission for formal adoption by the end of the year.<\/p>\n
