A landmark study carried out by scientists at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC), led by researcher Pedro Rold\u00e1n-G\u00f3mez, shows that Europe\u2019s success in tackling industrial pollution has intensified heatwaves across the continent. The study, entitled <em>Accelerated European Summer Warming Driven by Changes in Atmospheric Circulation in Response to Aerosol Forcing<\/em> It was published in the academic journal *Geophysical Research Letters*.  The findings of this study serve as a wake-up call regarding the urgent need for companies to adapt their long-term strategies.<\/p>\n<h2>Removing the invisible shield: The mechanism behind the data<\/h2>\n<p>For decades, heavy industrial activity has released huge quantities of aerosols and sulphates into the atmosphere. Although harmful to human health, these particles have acted as a protective shield. They reflected a significant proportion of solar radiation back into space, artificially counteracting the rise in regional temperatures.<br \/>\nWith the implementation of strict European air quality standards from the 1980s and 1990s onwards, this screening effect gradually dissipated. Cleaner air has allowed sunlight to penetrate directly, removing the veil that had concealed the true extent of global warming caused by greenhouse gases. The scientists emphasise in their paper that reducing pollution does not directly cause warming. Instead, it has revealed the cumulative effect of CO\u2082 and methane emissions, which until now had remained partly hidden beneath the layer of polluting particles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The paradigm shift in corporate risk management<\/h2>\n<p>This development is forcing companies to fundamentally review the environmental pillar of their ESG strategies. The climate models previously used for business planning need updating, as the rate at which the disappearance of aerosols is exposing European infrastructure to extreme heat stress is much faster than had been estimated.<br \/>\nIn vulnerable sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture and construction, updating business continuity plans is an operational priority. Companies are having to prepare for long and intense heatwaves, which requires direct investment in the resilience of physical assets. Solutions range from smart fa\u00e7ades and efficient cooling systems for data centres to rethinking the materials used in transport infrastructure.<br \/>\nAt the same time, the focus is shifting to human resources and health and safety policies. Protecting employees during heatwaves requires more flexible working hours and additional safety measures on construction sites or in factories.<br \/>\nFinally, the BSC analysis demonstrates that decarbonisation (Net Zero) and improving air quality require a unified approach.
